Politics of Global Climate Change Hearing

Hero & NASA Climatologist Jim Hansen

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee is attempting to cast some light upon the dark shadows of the Bush Administration. This hearing (See links below) on Politics of Global Climate Change was held Monday March 19th, 2007. The Committee has been aired on CSPAN, and has dominated my television viewing of late.

This is one of the benefits of ending one party rule. Finally, we see what Bush, and his pals have been doing for the last six years. It's not as if we haven't already heard about most of this before, but now we can see the major players being grilled by Democratic Congressmen.

Are Bush's men arrogant? Yes! Do they realize what they have done was wrong? Many times, yes! Despite any soul searching they still have jobs within the administration, look forward to their lobbying positions after they leave, and have some fight left - which makes it interesting to watch these hearings!

Also, there's the Republicans who show up, and those who are owned by oil, or coal are there to show that the lobbying, and campaign donations have paid off - they're there to let their sponsors know they've done good by them. It's not really an attempt to save Bush - he's a political poison pill not even conservatives want to swallow.

During the hearing the testimony given by quiet spoken apolitical NASA Climatologist Jim Hansen literally kicked the ass of all the Republican congressman who sought to discredit him. He stood up for himself, and wielded truth like a sword. It was interesting watching one Republican lawyer after another fail to make any points.

Bush Administration cronies for years have been placing enormous pressure on climate scientist to keep their mouths shut on global warming, and have even rewritten scientific reports all a bid to confuse the public about the reality of global warming. It never really worked, but it showed the oil, and coal industry that the donations to the Bush Administration were paying off.

Readers, if you don't want to watch the hearing (it's around three hours long) then just play some of the audio in the background while you do your web surfing, or blogging.

Global warming, and climate change is an important topic, one which the Bush Administration, and the Oil and Coal industry don't want you to learn about. The underhanded, and NAZI like tactics employed by Bush Administration goons is just plain sickening.

Folks we pay our tax dollars to get real science, and real answers to important questions which effect us all, but in the minds of the Bush Administration truth must take a back seat to policy, and policy is sold to the highest bidder - in this case the oil and coal industry.

It's pathetic to see the clown like Republican congressman owned by coal, and oil interest try their hand at defending the indefensible. Maybe they've gotten rusty after so many years of stifling debate, but the smell of their corruption stinks right through the television screen.

Valerie Plame Wilson's Congressional Testimony

(U.S. House) Vice President Dick Cheney Should Be Prosecuted
.
.
The Democratic led Congress is finally opening a series of investigative hearings into a broad range of allegations of illegal activities on the part of various components, and players within the Bush Administration.

This weekend CSPAN aired a repeat of Valerie Plame Wilson's testimony before the House of Representatives (Friday the 16th of March 2007).

One observation which I noted, and wanted to share was the line of petty questioning by the Republican members. The Democrats seemed to take the matter seriously, and were well prepared with excellent questions, but the Republicans tested their Joseph Macarthy skills, but fell flat on their traitorous asses.

Do they actually believe such tactics will somehow distract Americans from the obvious? Didn't the last election show them just how disgraceful the Bush Administration's actions have been even to hard core conservatives?

The few Republican Congressmen that actually stayed in D.C. (Fridays are fund raising days) looked either like traitors, or ignorant fools for supporting the group of goons within the White House who outed a patriotic CIA Agent.

The Republican approach on the committee is absurd now that the Democrats control the legislative branch and the committee, but it's the only thing they have left. Each question I guess is supposed to feed the conspiracy minded wing nuts that listen to, and call into conservative controlled talk radio. You know the one's that feel they're more patriotic than everyone else?

When you're a wing nut it's o.k. to support a President who lies to the people, and starts an unnecessary war. It's o.k. to destroy anyone who gets in your way - even if it risk the lives of CIA agents, and those who help them. It's o.k., even if it is a violation of the law. It's o.k. even if it harms the national security of the United States, and hurts this nation's ability to prevent nuclear proliferation.

That's because lying, and destroying others in defense of a lie is all part of the game plan that conservatives use with God's approval - it's right in their version of the Bible.

By the way, Karl Rove still has security clearance despite President Bush's pledge to terminate anyone who leaked Valerie Plame Wilson's identity.

One very real, and very good result of the last national election is that one party rule is no longer the case. We finally are seeing the beginning of a series of Congressional investigations into a broad variety of possible illegal, and unethical activities on the part of the Bush Administration.

Stay tuned folks.

Fish Oil - That's Right, Fish Oil

Four FDA Approved Pharmaceutical Grade Omacor vs. Twelve OTC Fish Oil Capsules
.
Yes this post is about fish oil. Fish oil contains high concentrations of Omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 has been clinically approved for use in reducing triglycerides, and in increasing high density lipoprotein levels in the blood. Eating a diet high in Omega 3 has been linked to reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.

The recommended way to increase Omega 3 consumption is by including fish, and whole grains in your diet. The FDA recommends that individuals with no history of heart disease consume at least one gram of Omega 3 per day. Most Americans fail to reach this healthy Omega 3 consumption level.

For individuals with a history of cardiovascular disease increasing Omega 3 consumption becomes an important matter, and under a doctor's guidance consumption of higher levels of Omega 3 could prevent a heart attack.

The recommended dosage for individuals with cardiovascular disease is between two to four grams of Omega 3 per day. Diet alone may allow an individual to reach the one gram per day consumption goal, but to reach four grams involves the use of Omega 3 dietary supplements.

Omega 3 supplements come in several forms, and the most popular is fish oil capsules. Most standard fish oil capsules contain between one fourth, and one third of a gram of Omega 3. By taking three to four fish oil capsules per day an individual can reach the daily recommended consumption of one gram. However for individuals trying to reduce their triglyceride levels, or who are trying to increase their HDL levels consumption of twelve to sixteen fish oil capsules per day is necessary. This can be problem. Some people have problems taking so many large fish oil capsules even when they know it could save their life. Other people have stomach upset, or don't like the occasional "fishy burp" from taking so many fish oil capsules.

From MedPages on Increasing HDL with Omega 3

Fish oils (omega-3 fatty acids). Dietary modification to increase the consumption of cold-water fish (eg, salmon) rich in polyunsaturated fats may help to raise HDL-C. Capsules containing omega-3 fatty acids (1.48 g of docosahexaenoic acid + 1.88 g of eicosapentaenoic acid) have been formulated and are commercially available in some parts of the world (as Omacor). In a recent small study in patients with familial combined hyperlipidemia, treatment with this formulation for 8 weeks increased HDL-C by 8%, particularly the more buoyant HDL2 subfraction. Levels of the antioxidant HDL-associated enzyme paraoxonase were also increased by 10%.[37]

.

Decreasing Triglycerides with Omega 3
.
.

Clinical Results of FDA Approved Omacor
.
Except for slightly increasing LDL levels in some individuals which take Omacor the dramatic reduction in Triglycerides, the overall cholesterol reduction, and the increase in HDL, suggest that consumption of Omega 3 has a positive effect on blood lipid values.

Not All Insurance Companies Include Omacor in their formularies
.

It would be nice if my insurance included Omacor in their formulary, but they don't.

Look at what Walgreen's charges for Omacor

A (one month supply) bottle with 120 one gram capsules is $165.99!

To cut my triglycerides in half using Omacor I'd need to take four capsules a day which means I'd be spending around $180 per month for that one product alone.

Omacor has been used in Europe for a decade, and is the only clinically tested, and FDA approved omega 3 product available. You can't buy it without a prescription.

There are other Omega 3 products available, including some that are very pure, and highly concentrated like Omacor which can be purchased over the counter. There are also products which are more affordable, but less concentrated like those in the photo above.
.
.
Why Take Omacor or Fish Oil in the age of Statins?

According to the American Cardiology Association the goal of reducing bad cholesterol (Low Density Lipoprotein) can be achieved through the use of Statins (e.g., Lipitor), however reducing bad cholesterol simply isn't enough to stop cardiovascular disease.

Despite the war on bad cholesterol over the last twenty years people are still dying of heart attacks - including those who take statins!

The first step is to reduce bad cholesterol, but good cholesterol (High Density Lipoprotein) levels need to be increased as well if heart attacks are to be prevented.

Good cholesterol is actually bad cholesterol which has been biochemically stripped away from the artery walls and is being carried out of the blood stream to the liver. The higher a person's good cholesterol level the cleaner their arteries.

Increasing HDLs is the only known means of reversing cardiovascular disease!

Taking Niacin, or Fish Oil (please consult your physician like I did prior to using either product) along with your Statin will actually reverse atherosclerosis.

Check this link which describes reduction in mortality due to use of Niacin, and Omega 3!

Born In A Garage - He's Now Royalty

Koshi Kat In A Kat Kollar

Since Koshi's surgery he's had to wear a collar to prevent him from getting at his sutures.

It looks like a cape!

He has to wear this collar for two weeks, and it's been driving him crazy since he can hardly groom himself. Cats are obsessed with keeping clean, so we've been having to use special sani wipes designed for cats just to keep him clean.

As long as no infection sets in I feel Koshi's recovery will be a big success. Koshi's on antibiotics so hopefully that will prevent any infections.

Patton - God I Love It So

George Patton The Movie
.
"All very successful commanders are prima donnas and must be so treated". - George Patton -
.
I can't help myself. When Patton the movie is broadcast I must watch. My wife thinks I'm insane, but the fact is there are certain movies which I find impossible to turn off. Patton is one of those movies.

I don't know how many times I've watched Patton, probably dozens. Each time it seems better. Now that is wild isn't it? George C. Scott really commanded the role didn't he?

I'd probably re-do the battle scenes with some digital effects, but that's all I'd change about the movie. The story, the acting, and everything else stands the test of decades. It's still a remarkable movie.

Job Conger Is Incredible!

Has anyone visited Job Conger's Honey and Quinine lately?

He's really rolling on his blog lately. He had a rocky start, but he's moving at such an incredible pace lately. I truly believe he is Springfield, Illinois' most prolific diarist.

Somehow I believe he has come to this time via a time traveling device of his own invention, and that he is from the late 1800's - possibly a friend of Hugo, or Bellamy.

One might not always be interested in a particular essay, but Job writes so much on some many topics that there's something there for everyone.

And get this, it's free!

It may look like I'm stalking the WICS 20 video camera, but it's just a coincidence, really it is! Sure she's beautiful, and I find myself drawn to her, but I know it would never work. She's high tech, and meant for the lime light, while I am destined to lurk in the shadows.
.
The photographs above were taken at the Jerome, Illinois Tornado Survivors Party. The party was held March 11th, 2006. It was held Sunday at the Jerome Community Center. There were hundreds of Jeromites in attendance. Today, March 12th marks one year since two F2 tornadoes visited our fair village. We were exceptionally lucky. If the tornadoes were just a bit stronger we would have lost some lives, and I doubt there would be much left of the village.

Have You Ever Felt Like This?

If untreated FLUTD is fatal in male cats between 24 and 36 hours. Essentially you have three choices pay up front to catheterize the cat with no assurance that you won't end up needing to catheterize again, euthanasias the cat, or take the cat home to die a painful death.

If you don't have the money or the credit your cat dies. If you have the money, and the credit veterinarians can pretty much charge whatever they want. If you stop paying at any point your cat dies - it's that simple.

This type of surgery like any surgery involved risk, but when successful it all but eliminates future threats to our cat's life due to FLUTD. Should Dave Be Sued?

Dave of the11thhour links to a post of Iggyz in which Iggy attempts to answer the question - Should Dave of the11thour take credit for causing Brian Pierce, and Kelly Michaels to lose their jobs at WNNS?

Iggy mentions a night out at The Barrel Head (local restaurant in Jerome, Illinois) in which some type of discussion took place confirming that Dave and Brian's heated blog exchange as the reason for Brian and Kelly's dismissal from WNNS.

Iggy even mentions a lawsuit?

Dave in his most recent post admits it was his fault!

Should Dave be sued? Not quite certain, but certainly he should be investigated.

Father Westhoff Wore A Gold Pulsar Watch

A Pulsar LED Digital Wrist Watch - One of the First Digital Watches Available
.
.
A Random Childhood Memory
.
Father Westhoff of Blessed Sacrament Church in Springfield, Illinois wore a gold Pulsar Red LED Wrist Watch.

It was the first, and only (to that point) Digital watch I had ever seen, and it would be many years until such watches would be common place.

Father Westhoff told us that it was given to him as a gift.

Father Westhoff would come out on the playground as he walked to the rectory where he lived, and children would rush over to him, and ask him to show them his incredible LED watch. It was quite a thrill.
.

The First Digital Watch I Ever Saw Was A Pulsar
.
As I recall to set the watch involved the use of small magnets.

All the children wanted to touch the watch, but he was very careful with it, saying that it was very expensive.

I knew that when I grew up I wanted such a watch, as it had something to do with the future, and with space, although I wasn't quite sure how, or why.
.

Father Westhoff Wore A Gold Pulsar Watch
.
..

Here's an excellent snippet from BBC on the history of the LED Watch:

Pulsar and the LED Display

In 1972, Hamilton produced the first watch with a digital display. They had hinted that they had a new breakthrough as early as 1970 but had two years of teething problems before its 18-carat gold Pulsar hit the world at a price of $2,100. By pressing a button on the side, the time was displayed on a red numeric display, caused by a light emitting diode (LED) display. Hamilton had provided a brief glimpse into the future in Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey when the company provided the futuristic digital clock that featured in the film. John Bergey who was head of Hamilton's Pulsar division said that this had inspired his team with the vision for their new timepiece which was then in development.

The LED is created by passing a electric charge through inorganic materials. Seven electronic switches went into making each of the numerals on the display. The original red light was generated by using aluminium gallium arsenide (AlGaAs), however Pulsar later produced a green LED using gallium nitride (GaN).

Many in the industry began to believe that the new quartz analogue watches would even be doomed to extinction so soon after their arrival that it wasn't worth buying into the trend, something which was reflected in the writings of Douglas Adams and other contemporary writers at the end of the 1970s and start of the 1980s.

Before the watch companies could 'do away with' the analogue watch though, they first had to bring down the price of the digital successor. Competition in the digital field increased and by 1975 there were over 80 varieties available. This competition helped to bring prices down but the product was still out of the range of the average consumer.

The Plastic Case

Texas Instruments brought the digital watch to the masses much as Henry Ford had brought the car. In 1975 they produced the first LED watch with a retail price of only $20; the following year this was halved. This level of competition saw Pulsar lose $6 million and find itself sold to competitors twice in the space of a year, eventually becoming a subsidiary of Seiko and reverting to making analogue quartz watches.

.
Wow Father Westhoff wore a watch that cost enough to buy a car back then!

..
Recollections On Father Westhoff

Some might see that as a conflict - that somehow a Priest shouldn't be wearing a watch that was such a luxury, but it was a gift. Also Father Westhoff was such an activist for the poor and elderly that he was arrested several times while demonstrating at nursing homes if he found the conditions there unacceptable.

Father Westhoff was quite the radical back then in the late sixties, and early seventies. Eventually because of his advocacy for the poor, and elderly he was shipped out of Springfield (the state capital), and exiled to Decatur, Illinois.

Father Westhoff was the first priest I had the opportunity to admire for commitment to social issues, and Springfield, Illinois being a bastion of conservative politics forced his brand of social advocacy out. I'm sure the Bishop was worried about contributions more than he was whether elderly people were laying in their own excrement at the local nursing home.

Dave of the11thhour may want to share "The Slap Story", but despite this one incident Father Westhoff didn't seem to be anything but what a priest should be, which is increasingly rare in this jaded age.

I've read a New York Times article that detailed the reinvigoration of the Catholic Church. Millions of Hispanic immigrants are flocking not only to the United States, but also reversing the decline in attendance in parishes throughout the nation. In some cities there aren't enough Catholic churches.

It appears that the Church is once again grappling with the issue of how to approach social justice. In Latin America the Church has played a significant role as advocate for the impoverished masses, while in the United States priest, and Bishops have been expected to keep quite. This may change, and once again we may see the likes of a Father Westhoff here in our very own hamlet of conservativism. What a day that will be.

Li'l Elvis Left The Building - A Costly Penis!

Trouble With Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease

Not one, not two, but three expensive (totaling $3400) bouts with FLUTD in the last four months has forced my family to decide to have one of our cat's undergo surgery to remove his penis.

What?

A penis must be amputated!

Just one more time - I can't hear you!

A penis must be chopped clean off!

Shudder!
.
.
FLUTD Will Kill Your Male Cat in 24 Hours!

If you suspect that your male cat has a problem urinating get your cat and your credit card and go immediately to the veterinarian. Do NOT wait to see if it goes away by itself, because your cat will die if you wait.
.
If you know much about a cat's penis, and not many of us do, you'll know that they are very very very small. Now that sounds like it might not be a problem for anyone other than cats, but it turns out that cats can get a disorder called FLUTD (i.e., Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease) which is most often caused by bladder crystals. These crystals, and sometimes clumps of protein can obstruct a cats urinary tract.

In the case of female cats there's not much to worry about. FLUTD is just a nuisance for female cats. A bit of a strain at the litter box, or perhaps a spell of urinating in unusual places - which is rare for cats. You'll still want to check with your vet if you notice such problems with your female cat.

However with male cats FLUTD is fatal. If left untreated within twenty four to thirty six hours a male cat's kidneys begin to shut down, and death quickly follows. Since cat owners may not notice their cat's urination problem the first day by the time they do respond their cat may die even if they rush their male cat in for treatment. It's that big of an emergency, yet many cat owners have never heard of FLUTD.

In Male cats with FLUTD the cat's penis becomes clogged with crystals or protein clumps which prevents the cat from urinating. Urine builds up in the bladder, and this begins to prevent their kidneys from excreting urea. Urea is a poison which must be eliminated from the blood, and so within a very short period of time a healthy cat can die simply because it can't urinate.

This type of blockage happens in other animals too, but is found most often in cats. The penis of a cat is approximately the size of the tip of an ink pen.

Cats urinate far less frequently than human beings do, and their urine is much more concentrated. Mineral content is much higher in cat urine, and that is why crystals form in a cat's bladder more often, and more quickly than in a human being's bladder.
.
.
Diet, Stress, and Dehydration

Two of the biggest factors which contribute to cat's being stricken with FLUTD is stress, and eating food with high levels of magnesium, and phosphorus.

Stress plays a major role as it tends to interrupt when and how often a cat urinates. A cat's urine becomes more acidic when it is under stress. In fact in many countries FLUTD is treated by prescribing anti-depressants (for the cat).

Within the last fifteen years most popular brands of cat food have been reformulated so as to reduce levels of phosphorus, and magnesium. This change resulted in a significant drop in the incidence of FLUTD. Despite the reformulations many critics have argued that most popular brands of cat food still contain too much phosphorus, and magnesium.

There are special cat foods which have reduced levels of phosphorus, and magnesium. These formulations are usually twice as expensive as regular dry cat food, but the cost is easily justified when one takes into consideration the veterinary bills related to even one bout with FLUTD.

Dehydration also plays a role in the incidence of FLUTD.

FLUTD tends to spike when the weather becomes cold and dry. Some veterinarians suggest that cats not be fed dry cat food at all, but instead be provided with wet cat food as it provides cats with an added source of water. Some veterinarians suggest that cats be provided with distilled water to reduce the amount of minerals they drink in their water.

For many cats FLUTD is a recurring threat.
.
.
What Happens When You Rush Your Cat To The Vet?

When a cat is rushed to the veterinarian the vet will try to unclog the penis manually, but if that fails a small hollow tube called a catheter is inserted into the urethra. The bladder is then drained, and refilled with saline solution and then drained again. XRays are taken of the bladder to check for bladder stones. Usually a sedatives, antibiotics, pain killers, and antispasmodics are administered to help the cat to urinate while catheterized.

Some cats are so ill by the time they reach the veterinarian that they need to stay several days while they are given intravenous fluids to help them rehydrate. Several Urine test are used to check the urine for crystals.

Most cats if treated in time recover without any damage to their bladders, or kidneys.

I recommend leaving your cat at the veterinarian's office for observation after initial treatment. We brought our cat home early, and ended up rushing him back to the clinic and spending twice as much money - simply because we thought we'd save money by bringing him home early.

Still even leaving the cat for observation before bringing him home doesn't insure that your cat won't relapse - our cat did.

Many cats are repeaters. Even when stress levels are reduced, and diets are changed cats can still fall prey to FLUTD. When that happens amputation of the cat's penis is often the treatment of choice. Amputating the penis opens up a larger urethral opening, and eliminates the danger of the cat dying from FLUTD. Amputating a cat's penis is costly, and entails the possibility of post operative infection, but it saved our cat's life.

The biggest concern related to the treatment of FLUTD is getting the male cat into the veterinarian before it's too late.
.
.
Cost Add Up Quickly

It can cost big time money to get a tiny tiny tiny tube inserted into a cat's tiny tiny tiny penis, because the cat must be placed under anesthesia first. Cats just don't like having tubes inserted into their penises.

Next comes the Xray for bladder stones, various medicines, and urinalysis, and blood test.

Then of course comes nights of observation, rehydration, saline flushes, and the amputation of the penis if necessary.
.
.
The Horror, The Horror!

To have a cat's PENIS CHOPPED OFF cost far more than you'd ever believe.

In the last four months we have spent $3400 on saving one cat's life due to FLUTD! The cost of buying a used automobile to save a little cat's life.

Essentially you have three choices (1) catheterize your cat with no assurance that you won't end up needing to catheterize again or even have your cat's penis removed, (2) euthanasias your cat, or (3) take your cat home to die an agonizing death. If you love your cat, and you have the money prepare to spend as much as it takes to make your cat well.

If you don't have the money or the credit your cat dies. If you have the money veterinarians can pretty much charge whatever they want. If you stop paying at any point treatment ends, and your cat dies - it's that simple. Didn't anyone ever tell you about this before you adopted, and fell in love with your cat? No? Well you know now.
.
.
Bills Bills Bills

Here's a list of links to the bills I'm still paying on - read it and weep:

.
Billing Pages For Same FLUTD Incidence

$ 675.10 ..... Page One
$ 133.25 ..... Page Two
$ 136.70 ..... Page Three
$ 779.23 ..... Page Four
$ 135.25 ..... Page Five
$1859.53 ..... Grand Total (Does Not Include $1500 For Same Cat 11/2006)
.
.
Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disorder is a real money maker for Veterinarians. It's a life or death condition for male cats. Companies which produce popular brands of cat food still include too much phosphorus, and magnesium in their formulas.
.
Despite switching to a prescription only cat food our cat's urethra was so badly scarred from being catheterized twice in November of 2006 that he still ended up being blocked again by March of 2007, and needed surgery to prevent further episodes of FLUTD by having his penis amputated.

UPDATE: Koshi Kat is doing just fine. It's been nearly six months since the surgery, and no sign of FLUTD. We still buy the special cat food for all of our cats too.

Air Force Airborne Laser Project

Found this rather interesting site - from which I'm reposting some of these photos of the Lockheed Martin Laser Turret which is employed on the United States Air Force's Airborne Laser System.

Martin Luther King An American Hero

An American Hero - Martin Luther King

"I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality... I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word".... - Martin Luther King Jr. -
.
Why Martin Luther King?

Some questioned, and many still do the merits of a national holiday which celebrates the life and contribution of Martin Luther King. I never fully understood the controversy, nor have I ever fully appreciated the contributions which King, and other civil rights advocates made.

There seems to be a dividing line between the United States before the accomplishments of the civil rights movements in the 1950s, and 1960s and what has come after. It is true that poverty and all that poverty implies still haunts a large percentage of urban blacks, but laws forbidding segregation, and legal discrimination have changed society significantly for blacks, and every American.

If one considers the absolute evil which white people committed upon blacks for hundreds of years it is obvious that any transition away from slavery was bound to take more than a signature upon a proclamation, and an Amendment to the Constitution. Slavery did not end after the Civil War.

Many Americans seem oblivious to the effects which Jim Crow laws, and racial discrimination in general had upon blacks in the century following the end of the Civil War. They ask why it is that blacks didn't rise up like other minorities such as the Irish who were hated even by blacks. The reason was simple - race.

Irish, Italian, and other Caucasian minorities could lose their accents, adopt English as their primary language, intermarry, live, and work with other Caucasians, and thereby melt into mainstream society. Blacks on the other hand were segregated and discriminated against as if they were some form of lower beast.

Martin Luther King was by no means the only civil rights leader in this nation either before or after his assassination, however he played a pivotal role in the cause for justice and freedom which can not be overstated. Some have argued that the cause of liberty and equality was a historic wave, and that another individual would have filled the role that King played if he had not risen to the challenge. This is likely true, yet it was King who dedicated his life to the cause, and it was King who gave his life for the cause.
.
.
The Darkness Within
.
Why was this done to blacks? Because it could be done. There was never any moral imperative, or guiding wisdom behind slavery, or racial discrimination. It took place, and still takes place simply because it can. A primitive instinct of domination and control within the human heart seeks expression in a variety of ways.

We see the human instinct to dominate others expressed in hundreds of ways; from the relationships we have with our spouses and children, to the size of our cubicles and the location of our parking spaces at work. We see it in the type of cars we drive, the food we eat, the clothes we wear. We see it in the neighborhoods we live in, the schools we send our children to, and even in the way we throw our heads back to avoid eye contact with other's who we deem inferior because they may be fatter, older, uglier, or wearing less expensive clothing than we are.

Human beings are infected with the desire to establish, and enforce an apelike dominance hierarchy. The entire fabric of human society seems dependent upon this animal impulse, and a never ending string of wars throughout human history suggest it has always been so.

People of all races, and societies do this simply because it is the nature of the beast that they are. We are after all sentient beings living within apelike body forms. We carry within us instincts that may have allowed us to survive as individuals, but which have wrought continuous conflict upon humankind. Some call this proof of man's propensity toward sin, or the original sin, while others call it human nature. In any case there is a dark, irrational, and dangerous side to being human - no matter who you are.

Race was just an excuse for one group of people to exploit and control others, and to do so without feeling bad about themselves in the process. It was in effect a form of warfare. White people effectively waged war upon black people in this nation for hundreds of years. The effects of this war upon blacks have been similar to what was seen on Europe after World War Two - devastation. While half of all blacks have moved into the ranks of the Middle Class the remaining half are still living in poverty. This is a direct result of discrimination no matter how much white people want to deny it.
.
.
Yoking Oneself to a Greater Good
.
Martin Luther King fully understood that he would be killed for his opposition to the slavery under which his people were suffering. He yoked himself fully to his cause, a cause of universal freedom and justice, and a belief that human beings could rise above their sinful nature and end the cycle of violence and self destruction which has haunted all of human kind from the beginning of history.

King is one of America's greatest heroes. His contributions, and that of all civil rights activist have forced the United States to realize that the liberties announced within the Declaration of Independence, and the United States Constitution are meant for every man, woman, and child not just in this nation, but around the world.

We all owe a debt to Martin Luther King, and to others who opposed the evils of discrimination based upon race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, gender, age, and sexual orientation.

Martin Luther King sacrificed his life to lift up this nation, to set it free, and to give it a chance to become the best it can be.

UFO Over Springfield, Illinois November 2006

UFO Over Springfield, Illinois - November 18th, 2006
.
.

This Object Appears In Several Photos Taken November 18th, 2006

I've held off posting these photos for several months now. I don't really know what this object is. I can say I took several photos of it. I turned my camera physically from landscape to portrait, and the photos show the object still over the same area in the sky.

One of the gifts, and curses of taking thousands of photographs a year is that eventually you get some rather strange ones that you can't explain.
.
.

Here's The Same Object From Farther Back

What is it? I have no idea.

The view is west around sunset. It might be contrails, but it looks very odd for contrails.
There's been a major UFO sightings wave for the last several months, and we all have heard that Chicago's Ohare was visited by some type of flying disk only eleven days before I took this photo.
Still I make no claims as to what this is, but I will say this. I did not alter the photo in any way - except to edit it for presentation on this blog.

Why I waited. I showed the image to members of my family, and told Dave about it, but frankly I wanted to retain some level of credibility with my readers. UFOs are very controversial, and I've been posting a great deal about such phenomena. For me to take photos of said objects sounds a little too coincidental. I don't want people thinking I'm faking this.

Dave suggested I go ahead and post them anyway so I will.

Star Trek Movie Release Date - XMas 2008!

It's official the movie is not only being made, but will be released Christmas 2008! Earlier rumors about the movie focusing on Capitan Kirk's and Spock's early days at Starfleet Academy have been confirmed.

This from the BBC,

The latest feature, which has yet to be named, will tell of Kirk and Spock's first meeting at Starfleet Academy and their first outer space mission.

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who worked with Abrams on Mission: Impossible III, have written the screenplay.

"If there's something I'm dying to see, it's the brilliance and optimism of Roddenberry's world brought back to the big screen," said Abrams.

"Alex and Bob wrote an amazing script that embraces and respects Trek canon but charts its own course."

I've been a fan of Star Trek all my life, and I can hardly wait for this movie to be released.
