Champagne Supernova Destroys Pillars of Creation!

Hubble Space Telescope (1995) - Pillars of Creation

The Pillars of Creation have reportedly been destroyed by a Supernova's shock wave! Only discovered by humans in 1995, the Pillars of Creation's magnificent beauty will still be available for viewing on Earth for another one thousand years - despite having been destroyed six thousand years ago.

Confused?

The following is an excerpt from an article (January 10 2007) by David Shiga, appearing in New Scientist:

Nicolas Flagey of the Institut d'Astrophysique Spatiale in Orsay, France, led a team that obtained the image (of the supernova). It shows a cloud of hot dust thought to have been heated by a supernova blast that likely occurred between 1000 and 2000 years earlier.

Based on the cloud's position, the blast wave looked set to hit the pillars in 1000 years. Taking into account the 7000-year time lag for their light to reach the Earth, that means the pillars were actually destroyed 6000 years ago, Flagey says.

We will not see their obliteration from Earth for another 1000 years, however. And when we do, they will be in tatters – Flagey says only a few patches of the pillars are dense enough to survive the blast. "All the other parts will crumble when the shock wave arrives," he says.

Speaking of Supernovas, the same year HST first imaged the "Pillars of Creation", British rock group Oasis hit the charts with Champagne Supernova.

Oasis: Champagne Supernova
.
How many special people change
How many lives are living strange
Where were you when we were getting high?
Slowly walking down the hall
Faster than a cannon ball
Where were you while we were getting high?
Some day you will find me
Caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova in the sky
Some day you will find me
Caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova
A champagne supernova in the sky

Wake up the dawn and ask her why
A dreamer dreams she never dies
Wipe that tear away now from your eye
Slowly walking down the hall
Faster than a cannon ball
Where were you when we were getting high?

Some day you will find me
Caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova in the sky
Some day you will find me
Caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova
A champagne supernova in the sky

Cos people believe that theyre
Gonna get away for the summer
But you and i, we live and die
The worlds still spinning round
We dont know why
Why, why, why, why

How many special people change
How many lives are living strange
Where were you when we were getting high?
Slowly walking down the hall
Faster than a cannon ball
Where were you while we were getting high?

Some day you will find me
Caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova in the sky
Some day you will find me
Caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova
A champagne supernova in the sky

Cos people believe that theyre
Gonna get away for the summer
But you and i, we live and die
The worlds still spinning round
We dont know why
Why, why, why, why

How many special people change
How many lives are living strange
Where were you when we were getting high?
We were getting high
We were getting high
We were getting high
We were getting high

That supernova picture freaks me out. Isn't it reminiscent of this?
