Angelina Jolie's Tattoos

Photo: Actress Angelina Jolie

I've been a fan of Angelina Jolie since her role as Lisa Rowe in Girl Interrupted (1999). Not only is she amazingly beautiful, but she's a very good actress too. Despite my fan status I have a problem with Angelina Jolie's decision to mar her otherwise perfect skin by having tattoos applied.

Angelina Jolie's shoulder tattoo states, "Know Your Rights", which reminds me of a tune by The Clash.

Angelina Jolie's Arm Tattoos continue to change. We see the most recent tattoos which refer to the longitudes, and latitudes of her children's birthplaces.

I'm not really certain why Angelina Jolie chooses to put ink on her body. I've never had a problem with guys putting ink to skin, but Angelina Jolie is too beautiful to do this.

The current tattoo on her arm is actually drawn over a removed tattoo - the name of her former boyfriend. Below the current tattoo is a tattoo of a dragon which she has had removed.

Some say Angelina Jolie is a bit unstable at this point in her life, but I'd say that her ever changing tattoos are just proof that she'd look better without them.

Women should be careful where they put their tattoos, if for no other reason than their skin sags more and earlier (generally) than men's as they age. Although, I suppose the upper back is okay as it's not likely to sag. Maybe stretch, but not sag. Skin that is smooth and toned today can quickly become dimply and slack tomorrow - not a pretty canvas for art.

Sort of related: I was at an outdoor event a couple summers ago where a 75+ year old shirtless man walked up to me and said, "you don't recognize me, do you." He was an old and dear friend of our family. But, I hadn't seen him since I was a kid. I said, "I'd recognize those tattoos anywhere." He had them across his chest, forearms, and biceps. I was so awestruck by how amazingly firm he was at his age. And I thought to myself, if you were a 75 year old woman....

Why do you call her Andrea?

Andrea? I meant to do that.

To be honest - total exhaustion.

Sometimes I post so late (I change my posting times often) that I can hardly see straight.

Nice story about the family friend with the tattoos.

I noticed your daughter has some tattoos. I wasn't sure if they were permanent or not, but if so that's quite a commitment.

You mentioned having a daughter join the military - don't you have just one?

Having a "know your rights" tattoo just gained her a few points in my book.

Angelina is too beautiful to have tattoos all over her body. I really wish she would have them removed. I know of Angelina's dark side but also her good side. She has done a lot to help people. I pray God's blessings upon her for all the good she has done to help people. I pray that she comes to know God and that He would give her spiritual beauty to go along with her physical beauty. I love Angie! Keep sharing and giving from your heart. If you haven't already do marry Brad. You two have done great things together.

beauty is not forever. Our experiences make us who we are... every scar and wrinkle tells a story of what someone has been through. Tats are the same thing. Who wants to be wrapped in plastic, protected from the world if we don't get to live?

why is it less acceptible for a woman to have a tattoo on show than a man? if beauty is only skin deep, then why should anything like this matter?

i myself am a male, and have quite a few tattoos,(my chest, shoulder arm which are all linked together into one big piece, my stomach, and my leg) but that doesnt make me biased on the subject. tattoos are a form of art, just like the human body, they are a way of expression and even sometimes help to boost self confidence.

i still think that angelina jolie is one of the most beautiful women on the planet, and i feel the tattoos help to reinforce the fact that she is confident about herself and her beliefs.

all tattoos have a story behind them, tattoos are mysterious, yet beautiful.

people need to open up to the idea that the world is changing and that people need to express themselves in more ways than going on a chat show or being interviewed

I think she looks pretty with her tattoos. I actually have one (I'm a girl) and it was the first big thing I did when I turned 18. I drew it myself, and I still love it today. I think tattoos tell a story of your life, and what better way for her to tell her story than with artwork? :) Some people look better without them, but those who get them are just showing their individuality. :)

I don't understand tattoos myself, but if Angelina wants them then more power to her, I say. For me to do that it would take a lot of alcohol consumption and I don't think they make enough alcohol in the WORLD for that lol

i love her tattoos. they mean something to her. they arent just some shit ass flash work picked off a wall. not that there is anything wrong with shit ass flash work. but i think that tattoos are a way of showing something about yourself. and thats what she has done. sometimes later on she doesnt want a certain one anymore not cause she regrets it but because its not a part of her life anymore

I challenge Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie to spend those obscene reserves held by their 'Jolie-Pitt' Foundation on legitimate efficient 'humanitarian' work or turn the funds over to others who will. To date, they have taken in $22,000,000 on the sale of baby photos alone and spent or granted only a fraction of that on 'humanitarian' work or 'good will' of any kind. The rest so far, has been spent on PR campaigns, plane rides, and super-high end accomodations for Brad and Angie in exotic locations around the world. I also challenge them to meet the criteria of a legitimate charity, operate with a reasonable overhead, and get their 'foundation' worthy of a decent rating by ANY independent watchdog like Charitywatch.org. Otherwise, to stop using their 'foundation' as a travel/PR firm and stop seeking publicity for every donation made to their own 'foundation' shortly before or after the premier of their latest film or DVD release. I challenge Brad Pitt to do the same with his 'Make it right' Foundation. Which to date, has not met the criteria of a legitimate charity or been given a decent rating by ANY independent charity watchdog. Otherwise, to stop competing with 'Habitat for Humanity' for PR, credit, kudos, and funding. Who by the way have been building homes for the less fortunate in every major city including New Orleans for decades. 'Habitat for Humanity' has been 'Top Rated' for years by charitywatch.org and others. They operate with a low overhead, volunteer workforce, and donated materials. No similar effort can match their progress hour for hour or dollar for dollar. The homes built by 'Habitat' actually get lived in by the less fortunate. It works. In fact, hundreds of legitimate charities have been given good-excellent ratings by Charitywatch.org and other independent watchdog groups. By contrast, the vast, overwhelming majority of celebrity 'foundations' have been rated poorly, fair, or not rated at all. They usually don't even meet the criteria of a legitimate charity. Still, they have the nerve to seek funding from a number of sources including ordinary people, compete with legitimate charities, and cash in on maximum PR for their ineficient 'humanitarian' efforts. Its not right.

i agree with the comment before over the apparent social differences between men and women getting tattoos. tattoos are just body adornment. some people think men wearing jewelry is stupid in society today, but truth be told people, both male and female, have been practicing the art for years and years and years. i dont think the tattoos draw anything away from jolie's beauty, but adds a layer of mystery to it. it advertises her personality and makes you want to know more.
